It's you versus a bunch of peril of perilous enemies, mano a mano. You can attack the enemeies by matching 3 or more of the same tile type on the puzzle board. The bigger the match, the higher the damage to the enemy. You have a predefined number of moves you can make, after which the enemy will attack you before the move counter gets reset and you get to attack again. The first one to eliminate the others health wins.
This is where the magic happens. Literally. Bigger matches deal more damage, so try to make the biggest matches you can and set up without wasting turns. Cascade matches deal extra damage, so do your best to maximize your damage output!
Weapons can be purchased in the store and equipped/unequipped in the inventory menu. You are required to have a weapon equipped at all times. Different weapons have different characteristics that will aid you in battle, including rune sockets and stat boosts.

Runes give you extra abilities and power-ups. They can be purchased in the store and equipped in the inventory menu. There are two types of runes -- active and passive.
Active runes, when equipped, charge when board matches with the same color as the active rune are made. Once an active rune is charged, you can tap the glowing rune icon to activate the ability. There are three tiers for each rune. The final two can be equipped by leveling up your runes. You can equip multiple runes if you have enough slots in your equipment. If you have multiple active runes equipped, a button appears during fights to let you cycle between them. Only the currently selected active rune can be charged in a fight.
Sockets are slots where runes can be equipped. Different weapons and armor have different numbers of rune sockets. Make sure no to leave sockets empty if you have runes to fill them! (You can add and remove runes whenever you want for free. So go ahead and experiment to find just the right combination for how you want to play.)

Weapons and armor all have colored "rarity" flags, which indicate the relative power of the time. The higher the rarity, the more it will benefit you in the battle. The rarity types, from ultra rare to common, are as follows: purple, orange, blue, green, white, and gray.
You can buy potions prior to the start of any match,. There are three types of potions: haste, convert and enchant. Each one has a special function and will help you destroy your enemy more effectively. Potions cost coins and can be activated/deactivated by tapping.
You want to make sure you've got plenty of health prior to fighting an enemy so keep a close eye on the health gauge. If it's too low, you run the risk of dying (which will reset any stored ability charges). You can pay coins to heal up before going into a fight, but once you're in, it's just you and your enemy.
Certain enemies will cast spells on the puzzle board to try to impede your ability to hurt them. All the spells have different ways of being destroyed, so try to figure out how to destroy them as quickly as you can!
Matching tile sometimes can create glowing spell tiles. Including a spell tile in a match will trigger a single large spell of that element. Multiple spell tiles of the same element will increase the intensity of the spell. Triggered spell tiles queue up under the main character until the end of a cascade, and then they all go off together. The more you can activate in a cascade, the more damage you can do!
Convert tiles are created by making matches of 4 or more tiles. They come in the following forms.
+ Horizontal Convert - created by matching 4 or more tiles horizontally. Once triggered, every tile in the path or arrows will be converted to the same element.
+ Vertical Convert - created by matching 4 or more tiles vertically. Once triggered, every tile in the path or arrows will be converted to the same element.
+ Dual Convert - created by matching the same element vertically and horizontally. A dual convert appears at the intersection of both matches. Once triggered, every tile in the path or arrows will be converted to the same element.
